PSY208 Psychoanalytic Concepts

Course Aims
This course is essentially a follow-up to the course Psychoanalytic Concepts. This is a continuous assessment course. Some manuscripts by major figures in the psychoanalytic tradition are selected and introduced to students. These major figures include Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Erik Erikson, Karen Horney, Erich Fromm, H.S. Sullivan, Melanie Klein, Edna O’Shaughnessy, Marion Milner, Donald W. Winnicott, W.R.D. Fairbairn, Michael Balint, Heinz Kohut, Wilfred Bion, and Jacques M. Lacan. Students are invited to reflect on the challenges and suggestions imbedded in the selected psychoanalytic manuscripts by means of extensive group reading, discussions and debates.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOS)

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 

1. Identify origins and development of various psychoanalytic constructs;

2. Describe different perspectives in psychoanalysis;

3. Compare psychoanalysis with other perspectives in psychotherapy;

4. Apply psychoanalytic perspectives to conceptualize abnormal psychology and cultural
    phenomena, and;
 
5. Evaluate potential contributions and limitations of psychoanalytic theories concerned.
