BRAIN STIMULATION LABORATORY
The brain stimulation laboratory at Hong Kong Shue Yan University is equipped with two sets of non-invasive brain stimulation tools: (1) Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and (2) Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This laboratory is managed by the director, Dr. Bess Lam from the Department of Counselling and Psychology.

The brain stimulation laboratory is equipped with two sets of non-invasive brain stimulation tools: (1) Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and (2) Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This laboratory is managed by the director, Dr. Bess Lam from the Department of Counselling and Psychology.
- Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method that uses direct electrical currents (e.g., week direct currents of 1-2mA) to stimulate specific parts of the brain. There are two types of stimulation, namely anodal stimulation which acts to excite brain activity, and cathodal stimulation which acts to inhibit it.
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is another non-invasive brain stimulation method that stimulates the brain and modulate neuronal functions by generating a brief magnetic pulse with filed strengths from a stimulating coil.
Both tDCS and TMS may be used for research or treatment purposes with well-designed protocols.
