Message from Head of Department

Dr. Alex Wang-On LI

Welcome to the website of the Department of Counselling and Psychology.

The Department has been offering two undergraduate programmes since Shue Yan University was accredited the university status in 2006. The Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Counselling and Psychology is a programme delivering fundamental counselling skill training and prepare students for various counselling-related work settings, e.g. social services agencies and schools. The Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology is suitable for students who are interested in studying human behaviour and conduct research studies in psychology. Both programmes incorporate abundant internship and practicum opportunities so that students can apply their knowledge and skills readily upon graduation.

The Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology (MSSCP) for degree holders aiming at a professional career in counselling. It is well-recognized by professional bodies both locally and internationally and is the only programme in Hong Kong providing counselling psychology training at Master's level. Graduates of MSSCP are welcomed by counselling agencies and other social services organizations, while some MSSCP graduates pursuit their professional counselling career in private settings. Our Department also offers a conversion programme, the Master of Social Sciences in Psychology (MSSPSY), for non-Psychology first-degree holders. This programme equips students with psychology knowledge and allows them to pursue other professional psychology degrees including MSSCP in Shue Yan University, as well as clinical, educational and industrial/organizational psychology programmes in different universities. The Department launched a Doctor of Psychology in Counselling Psychology programme aiming at training professional leaders in the field in 2015.

The Counselling Research Center (CRC) delivers in-house training to students and supports staff and students in conducting counselling-related research. Besides, the Department houses multiple laboratories to facilitate its staff and students to perform psychological studies. Research facilities include a 256-channel EEG amplifier, an eye-tracking system, sets of biofeedback systems, transcranial brain stimulation systems (a tDCS and a TMS), Virtual Reality setups, etc. There is also a Psychological Test Library supporting various psychological assessments for teaching and research purpose.

Further information about our programmes and research laboratories can be found on our website. We welcome visitors on Open Day (usually in November) and during the recruitment period (usually in July). Contact us if you are interested in joining our Department or collaborating with us.
