Course Aims
This course aims to introduce the principles and practice of psychological assessment. In addition to several widely used norm-referenced tests of intellectual ability, personality, attitudes and values, consideration will also be given to assessments that are relevant to investigative and forensic settings. Students will become familiar with the strengths, limitations, interpretation, and presentation of findings from a variety of assessment instruments and will learn skills in both assessment planning and report writing. Students will learn about the ethical and social implications of assessments in a variety of contexts including socially and linguistically diverse populations. Opportunities for practice administration of assessment tools will be provided.

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Recognize various approaches to psychological assessment

  2.  Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various psychological assessment tools

  3. Describe fundamental principles and methods in using psychological assessment professionally and ethically

  4. Appraise the influence of cultural factors on the process of psychological assessment

  5. Interpret psychological assessment data in different settings such as school, workplace, and forensic settings
