Course Aims
This course aims at providing an overview on counselling and psychotherapy within the profession of psychology. Students will learn different major schools of counselling and psychotherapy including their philosophy, theoretical foundation, and relevant therapeutic techniques. They will also be provided experiential activities that allow them to experience various dimensions of the foundational professional helping skills

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOS)

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Describe the definitions, goals and development of Counselling and Psychotherapy

  2. Identify key principles, standards and guidelines regarding ethical practice and multicultural competence in counselling and psychotherapy

  3. Demonstrate basic counselling microskills in intentional interviewing

  4. Discuss core approaches to counselling psychotherapy practice, including their history, assumptions, concepts, goals and techniques
