Course Aims |
This course addresses theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the practical skills, involved in the engagement of parents and the family in the treatment of a child client. The course provides an overview of the various roles parents play in a child’s intervention. Efforts are made to define the family and the nature of the influence that family members have on each other, particularly the influence of parents. Effort is made to generate understanding of Chinese families, and the local context of Hong Kong. The course addresses skills in engaging parents, conducting intakes and assessment procedures with parents, as well as ongoing feedback and interventions with feedbacks. Key theories of family dynamics are reviewed to help students recognize processes at work in the family that impact on the child and their treatment. Students will have an opportunity to practice skills of engaging with parents and providing feedback on the child that is also an intervention towards the family as well. The ethical concerns involved in engaging parents is reviewed as well, to prepare students for difficult situations with clients in future.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOS) |
l Discuss the role of the family in children’s development and therapy and important role of parents in children’s outcomes. l Apply strategies and skills to engage parents in their child’s treatment, and build good working relationships. l Identify dynamics and processes in the family and how they affect treatment, as well as interventions to address them. l Evaluate the role of cultural and contextual influences on the family, and how it impacts on engagement with the family in treatment. l Demonstrate strong understanding of the key ethical concerns in work with parents and how they should be addressed. |
