Department of Counselling and Psychology Course Outline Course Title Counselling Students with Special Education Needs Course Code COUN370 Number of Credits 3 Duration of Weeks 15 Contact Hours Per Week 2 hours Lecture; 1 hour Tutorial Pre-requisite Course(s) N/A Course Aims There is a fourfold purpose in this course: first, the government’s current policies for students with special education needs (SENs) will be examined; second, services provided in educational and counselling contexts to students with SENs will be introduced; third, the assessment, education and treatment policies for the 3-Tier Intervention model will be addressed; and fourth, issues related to working with parents, professionals and para-professionals catering to the needs of students with SENs will be discussed.Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOS) Upon completion of this course student should be able to:
1. Describe the development of education policies and intervention model in HK forstudents with SENs;2. Identify the eligibility, appropriate procedure and source of assessment andtreatment services provided in HK for SEN students;3. Apply suitable counselling strategies and skills to work with SEN students, familiesand other professionals in the school settings in HK;4. Plan customized counselling plans and groups for SEN students and their familymembers.Assessment
