Course Aims
There is a fourfold purpose in this course: first, government’s current policies for students with special education needs (SENs) will be examined; second, services provided in educational and counselling contexts to students with SENs will be introduced; third, the assessment, education and treatment policies for the 3-Tier Intervention model will be addressed; and fourth, issues related to working with parents, professionals and para-professionals catering to the needs of students with SENs will be discussed.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOS)

After completing the course, students should be able to:

1. describe the history and development of education policies in HK for students with SENs;
 
2. describe needs of students with SENs and role of counsellor in working with these students;
 
3. describe the eligibility and appropriate procedure for acquiring SEN services;
 
4. identify the source of assessment and treatment services provided in HK for SEN students;
 
5. demonstrate an understanding of the 3-Tier Intervention model;
 
6. identify suitable counselling strategies and/or principles to work with SEN students in school context;
 
7. design individualized counselling plans for SEN students; and
 
8. design strategies to work with parents and other professionals and para-professionals in schools.
